Clinking onto a glass just to see who’d be listening
Charge them their ears to hear their favorite psalms
Or for a gracious donation, stroke the lines of their palms

Watch them waste and fade as their hands run smooth
And through their withering frames, she turns to smile at you

You watch her eyes dilate impossibly
Displaying scenes you don’t expect to see:

Your older brother doubled over laughing on your deck
Birthday candy in his mouth shaped to look like shit
You catch the camera lens as your gut voids every speck
And your father’s toothy grin as he records it

In dim lit warmth, you watch the shadows sigh across the floor
Another’s steady breath pressed to your side
She cracks an eye to ask what that stupid smile’s for
As your finger drapes loosely down her spine

Some joke spoils as a friend becomes a clumsy loss
And the knowing, all at once, just shook you through
Your mother squeezes out between her silent sobs
